Custom deck design and build covers everything from a first sketch to the final board being screwed down: site evaluation, structural layout, material selection, permitting, framing, decking and railing installation, and finish work like stairs, lighting, or built-in seating. In Charlotte, that also means accounting for local conditions a builder needs to plan around: clay-heavy soil that affects footings, Mecklenburg County permit and inspection requirements, HOA rules common in newer subdivisions, and the humid summers that push a lot of homeowners toward composite decking or rot-resistant hardwoods instead of standard pressure-treated pine.
There are 43 businesses in this category, ranging from small design-build crews to larger outdoor living contractors who also handle patios, pergolas, and screened porches. Quality varies more than most homeowners expect, mostly in three areas: whether the builder pulls permits and follows current IRC/local deck code (ledger attachment, footing depth, joist spacing), how they handle drainage and flashing at the house connection, and whether their quote is detailed enough to compare against a competitor's line by line.
Our scoring weighs licensing and insurance status, permit compliance history, material transparency in quotes, warranty terms, and verified customer feedback, so you're not just going on star ratings.
